to many and as &#8220;Sissie&#8221; to her siblings, was also her school teacher.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">She married Joseph Lawrence Wilkerson of Durham, North Carolina. \u00a0In December of 1915, their daughter Helon Clark Wilkerson was born. \u00a0Just over 12 years later in January of 1928, their daughter Marie Lawrence Wilkerson was born.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Nellie died on 10 January 1966 &#8212; months before I was born. \u00a0She is buried at Maplewood Cemetery in Durham, North Carolina.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/bbq-n-grits.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/285631_10151757855262524_834426837_n.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-26 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/bbq-n-grits.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/285631_10151757855262524_834426837_n-240x300.jpg\" alt=\"285631_10151757855262524_834426837_n\" width=\"240\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"http:\/\/bbq-n-grits.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/285631_10151757855262524_834426837_n-240x300.jpg 240w, http:\/\/bbq-n-grits.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/285631_10151757855262524_834426837_n.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 240px) 100vw, 240px\" \/><\/a>Nellie was quite deft with a needle. \u00a0My parents have a quilt square that was pieced by her and then embroidered with the names of my grandparents and possibly the date the quilt was completed. \u00a0She also made the wedding gown worn by my grandmother Helon and then my aunt Marie. \u00a0As you can see from Marie&#8217;s wedding portrait, the gown was beautiful.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/bbq-n-grits.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/311443_10150467463092524_1490608136_n.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-27 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/bbq-n-grits.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/311443_10150467463092524_1490608136_n-219x300.jpg\" alt=\"311443_10150467463092524_1490608136_n\" width=\"219\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"http:\/\/bbq-n-grits.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/311443_10150467463092524_1490608136_n-219x300.jpg 219w, http:\/\/bbq-n-grits.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/311443_10150467463092524_1490608136_n.jpg 621w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 219px) 100vw, 219px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">She almost most likely made the baptismal gown worn here by her daughter Helon. \u00a0Her great granddaughter Rachel was the last to wear it. \u00a0I thought Caitlin had worn it, but she told me earlier today, she hadn&#8217;t. \u00a0Nellie&#8217;s mother-in-law, Mittie Herndon Wilkerson, was a dressmaker, so she could have helped with the baptismal gown.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/bbq-n-grits.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/373932_10150685326727524_1141051994_n.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" size-medium wp-image-28 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/bbq-n-grits.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/373932_10150685326727524_1141051994_n-300x201.jpg\" alt=\"373932_10150685326727524_1141051994_n\" width=\"300\" height=\"201\" srcset=\"http:\/\/bbq-n-grits.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/373932_10150685326727524_1141051994_n-300x201.jpg 300w, http:\/\/bbq-n-grits.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/373932_10150685326727524_1141051994_n.jpg 960w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>I think it very telling that when I ask different family members about my great grandmother Nellie, they all get the same soft smile on their faces before they answer and tell that she was just the nicest person, a gentle person, a good person.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Dad called her Big Mama. \u00a0I always thought it was because she was his mother&#8217;s mother. \u00a0Makes sense, right? \u00a0 Anyway, he tells me she would greet him by saying, &#8220;Hey, Big Bill.&#8221;
